You probably remember Xena: Warrior Princess from its heyday. After all, it was a regular ratings topper in it’s day and ran an impressive seven years. You may recall the campy attitude, the blend of darkness and action. What you may not remember is that the series was funny. Yes, we all know it had tongue firmly in cheek, but I’m talking gut-busting antics that play equally well today. Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, brings the world more adventures with Hercules (Kevin Sorbo, Andromeda) and his best bud Iolaus (Michael Hurst, Power Rangers: Ninja Storm) battling with agents of Hera, giants, ne’er do wells, and other unsavory sorts. Herc and Iolaus also fight the good fight in a tongue-in-cheek manner and on occassion, meet up with Xena on various episode crossovers. Hercules, The Legendary Journeys – Season 1 (7 DVD Box Set) Xena, Warrior Princess – Season 1 Part 1 (3 DVD Set) Well, it’s been a while since Father Ted was discontinued on Australian DVD with many people left disappointed when it hit the obsolete bin. But now he’s back with series 1, 2, 3 box sets from Roadshow. Father Ted was first broadcast in 1995 and has gone onto become a classic cult comedy around the world including Australia. Father Ted – Complete Series 1 We have been busy adding more titles to the store, some are already in stock – just follow the link for more info….. Battlestar Galactica – Complete Original Series (6 DVD Set) The ABC has now made it official today. They will be launching the 24/7 News channel on the ABC’s HD channel, and forms the latest arm in the ABC’s widening TV presence, alongside the recently launched ABC 3. As mentioned a few days back, this will mean bring them into competition with Rupert Murdoch’s SkyNews and will do nothing to reduce the tensions between Rupert Murdoch and the ABC’s Mark Scott. It will be interesting to see what Mr Murdoch has to say about it all now that the plan is “official” Here’s a little promo the ABC is playing on their website. 6UD2MPFXSTHX In what marks a major development for YouTube’s content ambitions, the video site is to live stream every Indian Premier League cricket game. The revolutionary deal will see the games broadcast on the IPL’s YouTube channel. Google (which owns YouTube) and the IPL will share advertising and sponsorship revenues in what will instantly net the cricket competition a vast global audience. If successful, the move has the potential to revolutionise the sports rights landscape in Australia and around the world. Live sport is one of TV’s biggest drawcards, and viewers being able to find sport freely available online would mark a major threat, which would see television companies fight hard to block online rights being granted. The deal will bring renewed focus to the government’s current review of anti-siphoning legislation which is examining which sport should be protected for free to air Australian TV. It is including online rights in the review.
Shaun The Sheep – Abracadabra Foxtel is looking to bring 3D to Australian audiences in 2011. Chief executive Kim Williams said the company’s existing high-definition set-top boxes were 3D-ready and test broadcasts had been conducted in Australia, News Limited reports. “Foxtel’s HD set-top units have already carried 3D signals in our premises with terrific picture clarity,” Mr Williams said. Foxtel would continue to run trials on 3D transmissions over the next year, he said. “I expect that Foxtel will bring its first test broadcasts in 3D to subscribers in 2011.” With all new FTA digital channels being released, it’s no wonder that Foxtel are looking at new technology to keep ahead of the competition. ABC4 will be a 24 hour national news channel and will be launched without any additional government funding, rather relying on savings the broadcaster has made in other areas to cover the cost of the service. The plan has raised questions about the ability for the ABC to maintain quality news output, with one senior ABC executive telling The Australian that there is growing concern about the quality of flagship news programming on ABC1 will be affected. ABC Managing Director, Mark Scott has been the driving force behind the establishment of a 24-hour news service, which will allow the ABC to directly compete with commercial news interests, in particular Sky News.
The site, offering full-shows to be watched online legally, will allow users to stream video without needed to wait for the download to finish. Titles will remain online at au.tv.yahoo.com/plus7 for between 7 – 28 days depending on rights. Some of the shows that will be available are 30 Rock, Desperate Houswives, Lost, Grey’s Anatomy, Brothers and Sisters, FlashForward, Private Practice, Heroes, Castle, Better Homes and Gardens, Parks and Recreation and more. But unlike the ABC’s iView – no ISPs are yet on board for allowing PLUS7 as unmetered content, so watch your download limits. Also unlike the ABC’s iView, you will have to put up with mid show advertising……..just like real commercial TV I guess.
