ABC’s “The Cook and the Chef” hang up tools

After 154 programs and four years on air, The Cook and The Chef’s Maggie Beer and Simon Bryant are hanging up their TV kitchen tools.

Maggie says “The demands of filming on my family and business have led me to the difficult decision to leave the show. It’s been a privilege for me to have been able to share my passion for food with Simon and our audience. It always gives me joy when I feel I have inspired people to explore the wonderful produce that Australia has to offer.”

Simon says “When I started the show I had no idea that my journey with Maggie about the love of food would teach me so much, and I’ll miss the camaraderie of our days in the kitchen together.”

Simon confesses he was unprepared for how big the show would become. “I have to laugh when people call me a celebrity chef, I don’t think people realize that I have a whole other life, coordinating 800 or so meals a day as an Executive Chef at a 5 Star hotel. I am looking forward to spending a bit more time back in my kitchens…and getting a little more sleep will be a bonus!”

Executive Producer of The Cook and The Chef, Margot Phillipson expressed admiration and a great respect for the pair. “Maggie and Simon’s friendship, passion, and unprecedented generosity in sharing their food knowledge have become the trademarks of the program.

Maggie and Simon’s final show will air on ABC1 on Wednesday September 16, and will be a special behind-the-scenes look at the making of The Cook and The Chef, culminating in a farewell party at Maggie’s home.

I’m so SAD that this series is over.
The intergenerational and mix of industry experience has been wonderful to share! I’ve loved every minute of it!
There was a a wonderful chemistry between Maggie and Simon and their passion for great food and fabulous ingredients was inspirational.

Maggie and Simon had really good TV show chemistry, and it was a fun and INSPIRING show to watch, I am disappointed to see it come to an end. I can’t cook to save myself, I loathe the kitchen! B they made it look worth a try and that it might even be fun, and their show was just great entertainment anyway.

So sad. I watch this show with my Mum and we both adore it. Simon and Maggie have given us new ingredients to use and new recipes to try – thank you.

Well.. what can I say? Guys what a great job and what a pity you are going. You dont get cooking shows that arent rushed and that explain details as well as you guys do.
It wasnt the recipes so much.. a hell of a lot of us have similar recipes.. Its those sneaky little tips you passed on.. all common sense and so very useful to your audience.

Combine that with your knowledge and passion for food, your accuracy and those unrelenting little techniques.. the show was a cracker.

Gidday Simon and Maggie.. may you have many many decades of food enthrallment left within you and maybe a show or two apart…

Your cooking show stood head and shoulders above the theme cooking shows on the commercial channels.

Thank you so much,Maggie and Simon, for your wonderful and joyous cooking, but also your inspiring FUN and FRIEND-SHIP in that lovely country kitchen.
My Mum ,86,(who’s also a trained chef, but now disabled) and I watched you religiously every Monday lunchtime (which we combined with our own munchtime), and relished every exhilirating minute. We’ll miss you; but we are enjoying the replays now (please keep them coming forever!),and I’ve bought Mum many of your DVD’s,so we can join you any time we like in that Temple of zest, verjuice and chilli.
Enjoy your life, and give us the occasional surprise visit, please.

    Cheers,

I particularly enjoyed Simon’s input. I am a lentil and vegetarian fan and his recipes countered Maggie’s more traditional recipes. Are you sure you need to finish the show?

Hi Maggie and Simon, I just LOVE your show and watch every episode you’ve taped. I really like the format of going from Simons dish to maggies dish and I really enjoy watching how and where you source your products. these tips have really helped me – a complete novice in the kitchen – so thank you both so much for taking the time to teach us the wonderful insights you’ve leaned over the years.
    Kind regards, Alex
